The Faculty of Law at Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca is pleased to announce the participation of Assistant Professor Laura Lazăr as an author in The Elgar Encyclopedia of Competition Law, published by the prestigious Edward Elgar Publishing—one of the world’s leading academic publishers in the fields of law and social sciences.
Coordinated by professors Johan W. van de Gronden, Małgorzata Kozak, Mariateresa Maggiolino, Sofia Oliveira Pais, Cătălin S. Rusu (a Faculty of Law alumnus and professor in the International and Comparative Business Law master’s program), and Marc Veenbrink, the encyclopedia represents one of the most ambitious publishing projects dedicated to competition law, bringing together contributions from renowned researchers and practitioners worldwide. The work offers a systematic analysis of the key concepts and institutions of competition law and is poised to become a reference work for academia, competition authorities, courts, and legal practitioners.
The contribution authored by Laura Lazăr, titled Excessive Prices in EU Competition Law, addresses one of the most complex and topical issues in European competition law: the control of excessive prices charged by undertakings in a dominant position. The study analyzes the evolution of the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union and the practice of the European Commission, as well as the legal and economic criteria used to identify an excessive price within the meaning of Article 102 TFEU.
This topic holds special significance in the author’s academic career, having been the subject of continuous research for over a decade. It formed a central focus of her doctoral thesis—defended in 2012 under the joint supervision of the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at Babeș-Bolyai University—which explored the relationship between competition law and economic analysis within the field of Economics and International Business. The research findings were subsequently expanded and incorporated into the monograph Tratat de dreptul Uniunii Europene în domeniul concurenței, co-authored with Professor Ioan Lazăr and published by C.H. Beck in 2025; this stands as one of the most comprehensive Romanian works dedicated to European competition law. For this work, the author received the “Iosif Gavril Chiuzbaian” Award from the Union of Jurists of Romania, an honor recognizing outstanding scholarly contributions to the field of law.
Participation in The Elgar Encyclopedia of Competition Law represents international recognition of the research conducted at the Babeș-Bolyai University Faculty of Law and confirms the integration of legal research from Cluj-Napoca into major international publishing projects dedicated to competition law.
By bringing together contributions from authors affiliated with the world’s most prestigious universities and research institutions, The Elgar Encyclopedia of Competition Law stands as a key reference work in the field, offering an up-to-date analysis of fundamental concepts, case law, and recent developments in international competition law.
