Abstract

The Latin term peculium was originally used, in the Roman Antiquity, in order to describe the goods assigned to an individual who was placed under the authority of the father of the family and by the will of the latter. This especially concerned slaves, who were under the power of those to whom they belonged. Despite his servile status, which granted him no legal, civil, or political rights, due to the peculium, the Roman slave had the possibility, if his master authorized him, to earn money and goods for the dominus and himself and, thus, to make savings or even to buy his freedom.
